Today we learned one of the best kept secrets of school systems at large!

THE ANECDOTAL REPORT CARD

This is a report card that challenges the status quo, it brings into question the traditional method of assessing students’ progress. The anecdotal report card is a report of how students are progressing through curriculum by taking into account the student’s attitude, behaviour and performance in the classroom. It is a more cumulative assessment of not only the score the learner received on class worksheets but an indication of  the individual’s direction of learning for future instruction. These more specific observations of how the learner is progressing in curriculum give their future teachers an indication of the teaching strategies that work best for the individual as well as a more in depth understanding of what concepts the child is struggling with or thriving in. Here’s the kicker! Parents are able to request their children’s report cards from the school! Anecdotal report cards assess the learner as a person rather than an outcome on a test.

How’s that for valuable assessment?
